Thanksgiving day was going by in a blur. Peyton kept trying to help with food preparations, but everyone kept making her sit down. They had all gotten up and headed over to Jim and Gladys’ house mid-morning to celebrate with the family. Paige’s Family, Peyton had thought. She had been busy worrying about Spencer, but he seemed to be taking it all in stride. Despite the fact that he kept ending up in what Paige called those “Pierce conversations” otherwise known as deep, personal talks.

Now she sat at the counter arranging crackers and cheese on a plate for appetizers. She had begged for someone to give her something she could do while sitting down.

Gladys came to the other side of the counter and started icing a cake. Peyton knew she was about to be in a Pierce conversation too. “So Peyton, we haven’t even heard about Spencer before now.”

Peyton shrugged, “There hasn’t been anything to tell.” “Oh, I don’t know about that,” Gladys’ grin was wide.

“Everyone seems to be trying to get to know him,” Paige glanced over where Spencer stood talking to Jim Pierce.

“Of course they are. Like I said, we don’t know anything about him.”

“True. They just seem to be in a hurry to find out.”

“That’s our job, honey. We’re family, we just want to know if he’s good enough.” Gladys winked at her and headed back to the pantry without another word.

Peyton couldn’t shake the surprise of the word “family”. She didn’t know whether it comforted her or terrified her. Or maybe a little bit of both. With Gladys gone, Peyton turned to take in the room. The whole house buzzed with voices and activity. Kids ran in and out, parents cuddled and corrected them. The television lit up with the Thanksgiving day parade. But most of all, it was the conversations going on everywhere. Paige and Russell sat close to each other on the couch. Russell’s two brothers stood near the TV discussing the upcoming football games, and Spencer and Jim stood in the foyer talking about who knows what. It was definitely a family day, and there was plenty of family to go around. At least for everyone else, Peyton thought to herself. She shook her head and stood up to stretch out her legs.

In a matter of seconds Paige was at her side. “You doing okay?” She asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine, I just wanted to be up for a minute.” Peyton replied.

“Are you sure? I can help you to the couch.”

“No, I really get tired of just sitting,” she leaned on the counter for balance while she kept one foot in the air.

“But you’re supposed to be resting.”

“And I am resting,” Peyton’s voice had an edge to it.

“Okay, okay, I know. I’m just trying to help.”

Actually I think you’re trying to boss me around, Peyton kept this thought to herself. “I think I’m gonna go rescue Spencer.”

“Actually, I wanted to talk to you,” Paige took a seat and motioned for Peyton to do the same.

“Okay, what’s up?” Peyton reluctantly sat back down.
